Crying Wolf

Willow, a Red Wolf at the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens, had a twitch in her neck that was progressing down her right shoulder.  Dr. Adrienne Atkins could tell that her patient was uncomfortable and knew she had to find out the cause….

If you are a future veterinarian, this is a situation you might find yourself in when you become an animal doctor.  Here at Ichabod Ink, we believe experience is the best teacher.  We want to take kids and teens into a case and let them see firsthand what goes on behind the scenes.

A Pain in the Neck is our latest post to the Science of Veterinary Medicine section of Ichabod Ink. What I love about this section’s combination of article, video and photographs is that is that you can read it and watch it many times and, with each viewing, you will take away something different.

In this feature you will:

- Learn about the anatomy of the wolf. What are cervical discs and what do they do?
- See how committed veterinarians are to their mission of helping animals. The surgeon in this film, Dr. Tom McNicholas of Affiliated Veterinary Specialists, donated his time and facilities to help Willow the Red Wolf.
- Learn about cervical (neck) pain. What causes it and how is it treated?
- See how veterinarians partner together to help their patients. Dr. Atkins and Dr. McNicholas had to work closely together to diagnose and treat this patient.
- Watch veterinarians use advanced equipment and procedures as they work to relieve suffering in their patients.

I can think of no better way to explore veterinary medicine and the science of animals then by viewing the cases in the Science of Veterinary Medicine section of this website.

As always, more to come….
